Meet the PI

Emilie Demard

I am an applied specialty crop entomologist with experience in Integrated Pest Management (IPM), biological control, insect behavior, and acarology (study of mites). As a researcher, my goal is to enhance our understanding of pest biology to develop decision-support tools and management practices that promote the conservation of beneficial arthropods. As an extension specialist, I also evaluate current and new pest control options to optimize insecticides used.

I have always wanted to work closely with farmers and help them in developing sustainable and profitable production systems. Before I became a researcher, I was an agronomist with a focus on crop protection, and then I worked as a field technician and scouter for a private company. These experiences have shaped my desire to answer field-based questions and conduct applied research.

In my free time, I enjoy hiking in the mountains, running, and reading.

Current Lab Members

Simon Kok

I am interested in behavioral ecology of arthropods, particularly communication and interspecies interactions. My master's research project focuses on studying the seasonality of squash bugs to improve management practices in cucurbits. I have a BS in biology from Calvin University, and a background in agricultural entomology and IPM. Outside of academics, I'm into biking, music, and cooking.

Master’s Student

Evelyn Gillies

I am a current undergraduate student at USU majoring in Wildlife Ecology and Management. Since high school I have had a strong interest in biology, specifically entomology. I have a 3 year old bug collection that I am always adding to! My time outside the lab usually consists of finding bugs and watching horror movies.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

Join Our Team!

Interested in joining the lab? We offer opportunities for self-motivated, independent, and dedicated students with a passion for entomology and agriculture. Research topics include IPM, biological control, population dynamics of pests, mating disruption, degree day models, and biorational insecticides. Students will also gain experience in Extension programming by learning to transfer scientific findings into readily available information that addresses critical farmers' needs. Qualifications include a BS in biology/agriculture or similar fields, previous research experience in entomology is preferred, and the ability to work in a team.

We strongly encourage candidates to explore the degrees offered by the Biology department and the process to join the department here before contacting the PI.

Capacity to take on new students depends on available funding and alignment of research interests. Interested candidates are welcome to email a statement of interest and a CV to Dr. Emilie Demard. Please explain how your prior experience and future interests would be a good fit for this lab.
